If you’re planning to install the Creators Update on your computer, make sure that you system can properly run it. Two major computer manufacturers, Dell and HP, have already published a list with all the devices compatible with the Creators Update.
Of course, this is not the only element that you should take into account; available hard drive space is also an important element to check. As a quick reminder, earlier versions of Windows 10 did not define this option clearly. As a result, many 32GB laptop owners struggled to free up enough space to install the Anniversary Update.
Installing the Creators Update on low storage drives
With the Creators Update, Windows 10 detects limited-capacity devices and the Update Assistant will let users know that there is not enough space to upgrade. The Creators Update requires a minimum 10GB of free space.
If this requirement is not met, setup will recommend a couple of options.
- Free up disk space – Windows 10 setup will recommend you to run the Disk Cleanup wizard to free up space. The tool will remove previous versions of Windows, temporary files and old system restore points. (Speaking of Disk Cleanup, it is worth mentioning that the Creators Update will fix the Disk Cleanup wrong HD free space bug.)
- Attach an external storage device – You can also connect an external hard disk or USB drive with a minimum 10GB of free space and use it to install the Creators Update. If you already have files stored on the drive, rest assured they won’t be deleted.
In other words, if you don’t have enough space to install the Creators Update, the Update Assistant will inform you about it and offer you two solutions to either free up or add storage space.
