Most Mac users use the Apple iCloud storage service to save and back up files and photos. However, iCloud offers a limited 5 GB of free storage, which is insufficient for most users.

Because of this reason, many users who also have a Microsoft Office 365 subscription with 1 TB OneDrive cloud storage, install OneDrive on Mac and use it.

If you have also installed OneDrive on your Mac but want to sign out of the OneDrive for some reason, this guide is for you.

When you sign out of the OneDrive account in macOS, your offline files (files that have been downloaded to your Mac) will be available, but you cannot access files stored only in the OneDrive cloud.

This guide will show you how to sign out of the OneDrive account on a Mac.

Step 1: On your Mac, perform click on the OneDrive icon on the menu bar to see the flyout.

Step 2: Click on the gear/settings icon on the flyout (refer to the picture below) and click Preferences to open the OneDrive Preferences dialog.

Step 3: Here, switch to the Account tab to see your OneDrive storage usage and the Microsoft account email address associated with your OneDrive account.

To sign out, click on the Unlink this Mac link.

Step 4: When you are asked for the confirmation with the “Your OneDrive files will stop syncing. Locally available files will remain on this Mac while online only files will be removed” message, click on the Unlink Account button to sign out of OneDrive and unlink your Mac from the OneDrive account.

Sign in to OneDrive on Mac

To start using OneDrive on your Mac again, you need to sign in to your OneDrive account again. Here is how.

Step 1: Launch the OneDrive app to see the following dialog where you need to type your Microsoft account email address associated with your OneDrive account.

Step 2: Next, you will be asked to type the password. Type the same and then click on the Sign-in button.

Step 3: Click on the Next button when you see the privacy screen.

Step 4: Next up, you see the “Getting better together” screen. Here, select either Send optional data to help these apps or Don’t send optional data.

Click Accept.

Step 5: Click on the Choose OneDrive folder location button and select a location where you would like to save the OneDrive folder. The OneDrive folder will be used to keep all your offline files.

Step 6: Browse and select a location, and then click the Next button to proceed to the last step.

Step 7: OneDrive app will now start showing tips to manage your OneDrive account on your Mac. You can click Next to see all offered tips. That’s it!

In the end, it might show you the following “Get the Mobile app” screen. Click on the Later button to complete signing-in to the OneDrive account. If you wish to get OneDrive on your mobile, please use the Store on the mobile to install the OneDrive app.
