Set up fingerprint in Windows 10/11

Here is how to set up the fingerprint so that you can unlock Windows 10/11 with your fingerprint.

Step 1: Open the Settings app. On Windows 10, Go to Accounts > Sign-in options page.

On Windows 11, on the left side of the Settings app, click Accounts. Now, click the Sign-in options present on the right side.

Step 2: On Windows 10, click Windows Hello Fingerprint. On Windows 11, click Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).

NOTE: If the fingerprint option is missing, it’s likely because your PC does not have a fingerprint sensor or the correct driver is not installed.

Step 3: Click the Set up button to open the Windows Hello setup dialog. If the Setup button is grayed out and you see the ‘You must add a password before you can use this sign in option’ message, it means that your user account is not password protected and you must add a password to your user account first.

To add a password, on the same page, click on Password and then click the Add button (refer to the picture below). Next, type and retype the password, click Next and then click the Finish button. Once done, repeat the directions in this step to begin adding the fingerprint.

Step 4: Click on the Get started button.

Step 5: If you have assigned a PIN to your user account, you will be asked to type in your PIN. Please do the same to proceed further.

Step 6: Now, you will be asked to touch or swipe on the fingerprint sensor. Touch or swipe as many times as you are asked to complete the fingerprint set up. Once done, you will see the ‘All set’ message. That’s it! You have successfully set up the fingerprint.

If you wish to add another finger, click on the Add another finger link and swipe/touch the fingerprint sensor again.

Next, if you have not assigned a PIN to your Microsoft account (not required for a local user account), you will be asked to add a PIN to your user account. This is mandatory. You cannot skip adding a PIN.

Step 7: Click on the Set up PIN button.

Step 8: When asked for your account password, type the same and then click the OK button.

Step 9: Type and retype a PIN you would like to use, then click the OK button. A PIN is nothing but a type of password. You can use only numbers (minimum four-digit) or include letters and symbols by selecting the Include letters and symbols option. Finally, click the OK button to save the PIN. That’s it!
