A smart security camera is something we should all have in our home. It can act as a handy gadget we can use to secure our personal space by saving, and replaying clips when we need to. This may be difficult for a Nest Cam user because this process may require complicated steps. So how do you save clips from Nest Cam?

To save clips recorded with your Nest Cam, you have to create one from your cam’s footage. Nest Cam automatically records and uploads the scenery to the cloud. For you to take any recordings, you NEED to create a clip. To achieve all these, you need to FIRST have a Nest Aware subscription.

Nest Cam makes it possible for you to share your footage. But at a point, you would want to save it in your library just in case the cloud starts acting up. Keep reading to learn if you can store it locally, how long the footage you are saving can be, and steps on how to save your Nest Cam Videos.

How to Save Your Nest Cam Videos

Nest Cam does not only focus on continuous video documentation but also gives its users intelligent alerts, activity zones, record history, and the ability to create your clips from the footage made available to the cloud.

There are two ways you can create, and save clips from your Nest Cam. Let’s take a look at them below.

Saving it From Your Phone

To create, and save clips using your phone, follow these steps:

  • Open the Nest app, and select the camera. Scroll through the library of clips, and select the point at which you want to save. As the footage plays, press and hold “New Clip” to start recording, and release to the end. Select “save” to store your selected Nest Cam clip in your phone gallery. On your phone, you can make clips with a maximum duration of 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Saving it From Your Computer

To create, and save clips using your computer, follow these steps:

  • Go to home.nest.com and select the camera. Select “Clips” on the lower right part of your computer screen. Click on “create clip”, and select the point which you want to save from. Move the sliders to determine the length of your video clip. To save your selected Nest Cam clip, pick a suitable name for it, and click “save”. On your computer, you can make clips with a maximum duration of 1 hour.

You should have it at the back of your mind that when you are saving the clips from your phone, you can only extract the footage made in your Nest App. If you are using a computer, you can get all the clips available irrespective of where they were made. In other words, you get the footage directly from the cloud.

Can I Store Nest Video Locally?

Nest Cam needs to connect to the internet to upload recorded videos to the Nest Service. It also needs to be connected to a source of power for around-the-clock functionality. However, what happens if there is no internet, or the power goes out?

Videos are saved locally if you purchased a battery-powered Nest Cam. Your device will continue to record, and save video clips in the internal storage till your internet, or power source is back on.

For Nest Cams that are wired, videos can still be recorded and saved locally when the internet goes out. But due to the fact it has no battery, it won’t record or save when the power goes out. Just as discussed above, if your Nest Cam finally gets connected to the internet, and it uploads the footage to the cloud, you can still save the clip locally on your phone, or your computer.

How Long Does Nest Store Footage?

If you purchased the Nest Cam device, you may be wondering how long your gadget may store video footage in the cloud. The upload is done on the Nest Aware platform, and the system allows you to add extra video history to recordings that are captured by your device when it detects sound, motion, or any other notable events.

How long your device stores footage on the cloud depends on the type of Nest Aware plan you subscribe to. A basic plan comes with 30 days of event history only. The Nest Aware plus plan comes with 60 days of event history and 10 days of 24/7 video history.

To clarify this, “Event History” allows users to rewind, and review footage of important events such as sounds, motion, etc. “24/7 video history” on the other hand allows users to document every second using continuous video recording so users can search through this video for everything that happened throughout the event.

Conclusion

Now you know everything there is to know about saving clips from your Nest camera to other devices.
