• If you want to sell/give your Alexa Echo to someone, a factory reset is recommended.

  • If you feel that your Alexa is not responding as it used to, a factory reset would set it right.

  • If an update has failed or faced an internet connectivity issue, then it is probable that the update was not correctly installed and it could even cause issues with the previous stable version.

  • Using the App on your smartphone.

  • Using the buttons on the Alexa device.

Note: It is necessary to turn on the Alexa device by plugging it in the power socket before resetting the device.

How to Reset Alexa Using the App on Your Smartphone?

Your app on iOS or Android smartphone can be used to reset your Alexa back to the state it was in, the day you bought it, by the following steps:

Step 2. Tap on Devices located at the right bottom of the screen.

Step 3. Then Tap on the Echo and Alexa option on the top left corner.

Step 4. The list of speakers will be displayed. Choose the one you want to reset.

Step 5. Scroll down the list of options, and locate Factory Reset.

Step 6. Tap on Factory Reset, and choose the positive responses for any prompts that appear.

Reset Echo Dot second generation:   Press and hold the volume down button denoted by a minus sign along with the microphone button simultaneously for 25 seconds. Release the buttons when the light ring changes its color to orange.

Reset Echo Dot third generation (with clock): Press and hold the Action Button which is denoted by a dot, for 30 secs.

How to Reset Alexa Echo with the help of buttons?

Reset Alexa Echo first generation: There is a small button underneath the device which can be pressed by using a pointed device similar to a paper clip for 30 seconds. Note that the light ring must turn off, and then turn on again before you release the button.

Reset Alexa Echo second/third generation: It is much easier resetting the newer generations,  just press and hold the volume down and microphone buttons together for 25 seconds. Do not release the hold on the buttons until the light turns to orange.

How to Reset Alexa Echo Plus with the help of buttons?

Reset Alexa Echo Plus first generation: Turn the device on the side to reveal the base, and you will find a button that can be pressed by a small point safety pin needle. Press the button once, and release it quickly. The lights will turn off on the speaker. Wait for the lights to turn back on after 15 seconds. The device is now restored to factory settings.

Reset Alexa Echo Plus second generation:  Resetting this device is quite easy as it only requires the user to press and hold the action button for 25 seconds. The light ring will turn off and turn on after some time.

How to Reset Other Alexa Echo Devices?

Step 1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and choose Settings.

Step 2. Select Device Options.

Step 3. Locate Reset to Factory Defaults & Retain Device Connections and tap on it. The device will restart, like brand new.

Echo Show first-generation & Echo Spot. These are the older devices that came with a screen. The process is similar, but it does not give an option to retain the device connections and will erase all your personal settings.
