As with the case of previous Windows versions, Windows 7 also features a Guest account that can be used by people who need temporary access to your PC. For instance, you can allow your friends and family members to access your PC using Guest account, as they can’t install new programs, use existing programs installed for other user accounts, and also can’t delete data from your PC.
If you have turned on the Guest account on your PC (Open User Account and then click Add a new account to turn on Guest account), you might want to change the default Guest name of the account for a variety of reasons. Maybe you don’t like the name Guest; or maybe you want step-up the security by renaming the account to a name that can’t be guessed by attackers.
Renaming or changing the name of Guest account is a fairly simple job in Windows if you have access to the Group Policy Settings. It’s important to note that Group Policy Editor is present only in Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7. However, a workaround is available to enable Group Policy in Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium editions of Windows 7.
If you are bored with the Guest account name, you can rename it with a few clicks. Here is how to make it happen:
Step 1: Type Local Security Policy in Start menu search box and then hit enter to launch Local Security Policy window.
Step 2: Now, move to Local Polices and then Security Options.
Step 3: In the right pane, double-click Accounts: Rename guest account item to open its properties.
Step 4: Rename the default Guest name with your desired one.
Step 5: Click Ok to rename the account.
Tip: You can also rename the Administrator account by double-clicking Rename administrator account in Security Options (just above rename guest account option).
