Contrary to popular belief, your online activities are not private. In fact, everyone from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to your network administrator to the government (in some countries) can see exactly what you do on the internet. While complex technical solutions exist, VPNs are by far the easiest way to protect yourself from this kind of monitoring as they’re easy to install and not only let you change your IP address, they also encrypt your traffic, making it unreadable to any third-party observers.
Additionally. VPNs allow you to change your IP address, masking your true location and making it appear you’re located somewhere else. This means that you can use a VPN to get an Egyptian IP address, bypass government-imposed internet blocking, and access geo-restricted sites or services from anywhere in the world.

How we found the best VPNs for getting an Egyptian IP address: our methodology
Many VPNs don’t offer servers in Egypt and thus don’t allow you to get an Egyptian IP address. Despite this, there are still more than enough VPN services that do. As such, we used our methodology to help narrow down the options and find the very best VPNs available. Here’s what we looked for:
- Servers in Egypt: In order to get an IP address for Egypt, you’ll need access to servers in Egypt! This was the first port of call when assessing the VPNs on the market. However, we looked for VPNs to have servers in dozens of countries in all. That way you can access a wider range of geo-blocked and government-censored content.
- Speed: It’s little good having access to VPN servers if they’re too slow for browsing, let alone streaming and torrenting. That’s why we carry out speed tests on the VPNs we recommend, ensuring they meet the requirements for streaming in high definition. As such, we’ve been able to identify some of the fastest VPNs on the market.
- Unblocking: If you’re in Egypt, you’re suffering from particularly strict internet censorship. The best VPNs help you get around this although this requires connecting to a server in another country such as the US or UK. We test each VPN against a range of restricted websites and services, ensuring it offers a strong unblocking ability.
- Security: Browsing the web of course comes with some security risks, particularly if you’re connecting to public wifi hotspots. A VPN provides significant protection in the form of encryption, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch. You may even find some extra security features with your VPN such as an ad blocker or automatic wifi protection.
- Privacy: Freedom House states “surveillance is a significant concern for internet users in Egypt”. This makes it all the more important that you use a no-logs VPN service. Even if the Egyptian authorities were to request your data, there should be nothing to provide. Don’t worry, we’ve analyzed 140 VPN logging policies to find the very best.
- Ease of use: First time using a VPN service? Select one of the VPNs listed in this post and you can expect beginner-friendly apps that are quick and easy to navigate. As an added bonus, each service even includes 24/7 support. You can contact support via live chat as well as email for fast resolutions to any issues you happen to encounter.
- Value for money: Asking for all of the above may sound a lot but you’d be surprised by how affordable these VPNs remain. All of them include a money-back guarantee, offering you the chance to try them risk-free and request a refund if unsatisfied. Better still, we provide a discount coupon for each so you can save a little extra.
We assess each VPN in areas such as speed and security as part of our VPN testing methodology. That way, you can be sure that the VPNs we’re recommending above are the very best for getting an Egyptian IP address.
Internet censorship in Egypt
Egypt has a troubled history when it comes to online censorship. During the 2011 Egyptian revolution, the government blocked social media sites like Twitter and eventually even cut off access to the internet entirely to prevent protesters from communicating with each other or spreading news of what was happening to the outside world.
These restrictions have been loosened in recent years, though in 2018, the government passed the Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes Law. While this legislation was primarily designed to halt the influx of extremist websites, it has also been used to justify blocking several entirely legitimate sites including Al Jazeera, Huffington Post, and Human Rights Watch, ostensibly for spreading “fake news.”
In addition to blocking various news sites, VoIP services like Skype, WhatsApp, and FaceTime are inaccessible, although in some cases, the text chat features still work. The websites of popular VPN services are also blocked, so if you’re traveling to Egypt, we strongly recommend installing your VPN beforehand. It might also be a good idea to make a note of customer support email addresses and manual installation instructions, preferably in a password-protected file.
Server networks are expensive to build, so how can a free service afford to operate? Simply put, they profit from their users in other ways. For instance, most insert large ads into the pages you visit. Some go even further, though, storing tracking cookies on your device and harvesting information about your online activities to be sold later. VPNs are designed to help you take control of your own personal information, but by acting in this way, free services defeat the purpose of the technology.
There’s also the security aspect to consider. In a recent study, researchers tested 283 free VPNs and found that over 37% included malware. Additionally, 84% leaked personal information over IPv6, and 18% never used any encryption whatsoever. These risks aren’t limited to little-known companies, either: in 2016, Hola was caught facilitating a botnet with its users’ idle bandwidth.
The best way to protect yourself online is to use a reputable VPN with a proven history of standing up for its customers’ privacy.
Things get a little more complicated if the service you want to watch doesn’t solely rely on IP address checking. For instance, they might check your browser’s location data instead (although some VPNs, like ExpressVPN, offer extensions which change this automatically).
Additionally, while Egyptian residents abroad can still sign up to most platforms with their regular credit or debit card, foreigners looking to access Egyptian content likely won’t be able to. There are workarounds, such as paying via gift card, but not all platforms accept these.
Public wifi networks are everywhere, which is good because when you’re in an unfamiliar country, you never know when you’ll need to Google something. The problem is that there’s no way to tell who’s monitoring these networks. By encrypting your traffic, VPNs allow you to take advantage of these networks without worrying about whether or not your online activities are being intercepted.
As long as you’re getting an IP address for Egypt from a country in which VPNs are legal, you shouldn’t have any problems. Just be sure to stay within the confines of the law (no torrenting copyrighted material, for example) to be safe.
