Apart from these intended challenges, Owlboy also brings technical challenges as well. The game is affected by a series of annoying bugs but fortunately, its developers quickly acknowledged them and are working to fix them.

List of known Owlboy issues

  1. The game crashes with “Song playback failed. Please verify that the song is not DRM protected. DRM protected songs are not supported for creator games.”

This error appears because Windows Media Player is not installed, which is used by XNA for some of the sequences in the game. To fix this issue, install Windows Media Player manually and the game should run fine. D-Pad Studio is trying to find a solution to fix this bug in such a way that players won’t have to install Windows Media Player themselves in the future.

  1. Gamers can’t control the game with a keyboard if they have a controller plugged in. To fix this issue, unplug the controller and you should be able to play normally.

  2. If you want to use a PS4 controller while playing Owlboy on your Windows PC, you need a third party driver such as DS4Windows. When that’s done, you can select PS4 button prompts in Options > Controls > Controller. For information on how to use a PS4 controller on a Windows computer, check out our dedicated article and follow the steps listed there.

  3. There are strange borders on the top and/or bottom of non-16:9 screens. D-Pad Studio is working to fix this.

  4. Owlboy sometimes crashes on level load when the game has been running for a long time. If this happens, relaunch the game. D-Pad Studio has already made a fix for this bug, and should be rolled out as soon as possible.

  5. Music keeps disappearing in about a minute after players enter any map. No workaround is available yet for this bug.

  6. When gamers press the play button, they get the following error: “The containing folder does not exist”. Four choices are then listed on the screen: exit the main menu, load from checkpoint, copy the clipboard and enable crush dumps. No solution is available to fix this bug.

  7. The game freezes a lot: “Sometimes when I open the menu, sometimes when I press Start on Xbox 360 Controller, and if I enter in Otus House, freezes too. Sometimes when I’m just flying around, the freeze happens, forcing me to CTRL+ALT+DEL to finish the process.” It appears that reinstalling CommonRedist folder’s DX9 and repairing XNA solves the problem.

If you’ve encountered other issues that we didn’t list in this article, you can use this Steam forum thread to let the developers know about it.
