Unfortunately, Dark Souls III is sometimes affected by various technical issues ranging from low FPS to controller bugs. In this article, we’re going to list a series of workarounds that will help you fix some of the most frequent Dark Souls III bugs.

How to fix common Dark Souls III issues

  • FPS drops on NVIDIA
  • FPS drops on AMD or Intel
  • Dark Souls 3 crashes
  • Fix game stutters
  • The controller won’t work

1. FPS drops on NVIDIA

  • Install the latest NVIDIA driver updates.
  • Edit the Dark Souls 3 profile on NVIDIA’s control panel > disable all FXAA and Texture filtering options
  • Choose the maximum performance on every option > enable only triple buffering, VSync, segmented optimization, max of pre-rendered FPS = 4, VR pre-rendered FPS = 1
  • In the NVIDIA Control Panel > go to Manage 3D Settings > select your Dark Souls 3 profile > change the Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance.
  • Change your OS power management settings to maximum performance as well.

2. FPS drops on AMD or Intel

  • Install the latest driver updates.
  • Start the game > go to Task Manager > right-click Darksouls3.exe on folder details > select the highest priority for the game.
  • Increase the FPS of the main thread > go to your computer’s BIOS > disable the Intel H.E.I.S.T or SPEEDSTEP, or in case of AMD, the Cool & Quiet option.
  • If you’re using a quad-core, hexacore, or octa-core CPU, disable Hyper-Threading.
  • If you’re using a CPU with dual-core CPUs, enable Hyper-Threading.

3. Dark Souls 3 crashes

  • Go to the game’s settings > put the Effects, Shadow and Light quality on low.
  • Disable Steam Overlay: click on Steam > go to Settings > select the ‘In-Game Settings’ tab > uncheck the box next to ‘Enable Steam Community In-Game’ > click OK.
  • Reinstall the game.

4. Fix game stutters

Move the GameOverlayRenderer.dll and GameOverlayRenderer64.dll from the Steam installation folder to another folder > transform GameOverlayRenderer.log into a read-only file. Also, consider updating your GPU drivers. Alternatively, in the dual-GPU configurations, we suggest disabling the onboard graphics.

5. The controller won’t work

  • Update your drivers: Type Device Manager in the Search Menu and hit Enter. A list of devices connected to the PC will appear. Right-click your controller and select Update driver software.
  • If you’re using a DS4 controller, go to the DS4 Windows settings, check the first option to ‘Hide DS4 Controller’. Then,  launch the game. The controller should now work.
