After a long day’s work, it’s finally time to put up your feet.  You turn on your TV, still trying to decide between Netflix or YouTube.  Then, the worst thing happens.  You get a black screen.  How do you fix the black screen on an Onn TV?

In this article, you will learn how to fix an Onn TV black screen.  There are several easy techniques that should have your TV “up and running again in no time.”  If it’s a more serious issue, we’ll let you know when it’s time to reach out for help.

Restarting the Device

When you’re trying to fix your Onn TV’s black screen, there are a few methods you can try. The simplest, most times, is just restarting the TV.

There are several techniques to fixing an Onn TV black screen.  These can be as quick and easy as turning the TV off and back on again.  A bit more difficult solution might be fixing the backlighting.

Turn the TV off and on

The simplest solution would be turning the TV off and turning it back on again.  While it’s more difficult to pinpoint the root cause of this issue, this solution just works.  It usually bypasses the previous “bug” allowing you to get back to your evening entertainment without further interruption.

Unplug the TV and Wait

Don’t lose hope if that first method doesn’t work.  Unplug your TV and wait for at least 60 seconds.  Once you plug the TV back into the outlet, it should reset to the most recent default setting and work like a charm.  This personally worked for me.  If it doesn’t work though, try it again with a longer wait time of 15-30 minutes before turning the TV on again.

TV Settings

Sleep mode or using a TV sleep timer may also be the culprit for your TV’s dilemma.  By simply switching your settings to off mode, your TV screen should be restored to normal and be ready for your viewing pleasure.

Another common problem is the remote, which may also need to be reset.  In order to do so, you should:

  • Remove the batteries (discard and replace if you are unsure that these work)Hold the power button down for 15 secondsReplace the batteriesReattempt TV access

If none of these solutions have worked so far, you may need to delve into more serious issues. Fear not, we’ve got you covered with more technical solutions that you can address at home.

Addressing Technical Issues

Sometimes, restarting just doesn’t work. When this happens, there are several other things you can look at.

Software Update

For the next step in TV restoration, you should address the software’s update status.  Onn TVs utilize Roku’s operating system as their platform.  Roku’s online community support site has addressed black screens as a fairly common issue providing a website and phone number for assistance as well as a link for software updates:

Factory Reset

If you’ve been unsuccessful thus far, you can try a factory reset.  To do this, look for the reset button located at the back of the TV.  Hold the button down for at least 20 seconds.  Remember, that you will lose all personal data such as login information for your streaming accounts.  Can’t find the reset button? Backlighting

The remaining concerns are hardware related. If the TV is turning on, indicated by the standby light, you could have a backlighting issue.  Another way to confirm this is to shine a flashlight on the TV.  If you can see the images hiding in there, you’ll know that there’s a backlighting problem.

Power Supply

At this point, you could be dealing with a power supply issue.  This happens when no power enters the TV despite being plugged into an outlet.  Again, a self-diagnosis and treatment are possible.  By connecting to the computer’s motherboard, you will be able to determine the flow of current being transmitted to the TV.

Final Thoughts

Although disappointing, there are times when additional assistance is required for more complex concerns.  These include higher-level electrical and technical complications.  In the rare event that you can’t DIY or perhaps just want to avoid that, you do have access to local technicians that can have your TV up and running again fast.

Luckily, you probably won’t need a new TV.  A simple soft or hard reset should suffice.  Should the concern be more serious, in addition to the ones mentioned, there are many online tutorials and local resources to help you.  Alternatively, don’t forget that you can still reach out to Onn directly regardless of your TV’s warranty status.
