I recently bought a new MacBook Air laptop after using only Windows-powered laptops for over a decade. While setting up the shiny MacBook Air, I noticed that the tap to click option does not work or is disabled.

After setting up the Mac, I opened the trackpad settings to check if the tap to click option was present. As expected, the tap to click option was available, but it was disabled by default.

What is a tap to click?

The tap to click is a handy feature offered in all desktop operating systems, and most users prefer using it. When enabled, it lets you perform a click without pressing the trackpad. All you need to do is perform a gentle tap on the trackpad with one finger to perform a click action.

Even on Windows 10 and Windows 11, the tap to click (Tap with a single finger to single click) feature is enabled by default.

Anyways, the tap to click option is present in macOS but disabled by default. Here is how to turn on the tap to click on your Mac.

Turn on the tap to click on Mac

Step 1: Open System Preferences by clicking on its icon on the dock. You can also use the spotlight search to open System Preferences.

Step 2: In the System Preferences window, click on Trackpad.

Step 3: Under the Point & click tab, turn on the Tap to click option by selecting the same. That’s it! You should now be able to perform a click by tapping anywhere on the trackpad with a single finger.

The same page offers options to change the click sensitivity and cursor speed.

NOTE: Tap with two fingers for secondary click (or right-click as known in Windows OS) is turned on by default.
